A Very Brief Overview and Introduction to Electrophotography with an Emphasis on Toner and the Development System

An earlier overview which will now be referred to as Part I addressed the topic of Single Component Development [SCD] in its modern embodiment. The image below which was made by hand by Chester Carlson using essentially the same electrophotographic process steps still in use today also used a version of development known as Two Component Development [TCD] in order to create electric charge on the toner particles.
What follows is a very brief overview of the underlying technology. For further, much more in depth, appreciation of the complexity of the electrophotographic process and its many variations a selection of references is provided which cover in much more detail both the history of the subject and guides to many of the more technical details involved which this brief overview will not attempt to address. To serve as a reminder, in the following figure (which was also shown in Part I) the basic electrophotographic steps are shown arrayed around a cylindrical photoreceptor. Not shown are the automatic paper supply system, and the automatic toner supply system.
